My name is Jeff Butler. My father and grandfather were both woodworking hobbyists, and I spent a lot of time in the shop with them when I was young. I was fascinated by the tools, techniques, and passion that goes into each project. Throughout my school days, I tried to keep up as much as I could so as not to fall out of practice.
As I got older, I found that because of the demands of my day job, it may be best to focus on woodturning for a hobby. I can work in short spurts and easily complete smaller projects over the course of a weekend. I had some experience with woodturning in my youth, but I was unaware of how diverse the hobby can be until I really got involved. The characteristics of the wood grain seem to show through much better when working on a lathe than with other types of woodworking. Very little store-bought fasteners or extra pieces are needed, and you work almost exclusively with your hands. That’s why I find this part of the hobby in particular so rewarding. I’ve been at it for over 10 years now, and I have to say this is a great way to focus my energy and time.
I started this site because our community needs a comprehensive resource for product reviews and rankings. When I was first starting out, I was making daily runs to the hardware store because I’d forgotten this or that, or I’d simply purchased the wrong tool for the job. Adding to that frustration, some of the stuff available is just not of very high quality. I would spend so much money on brands or tools that turned out to be worthless or harmful. So I’ll be completing reviews for a variety of woodturning products. By highlighting the best tools and products, we can take some guesswork out of the process and allow our craftsmanship to flourish.
My goal is to eliminate wasted time in the shop (or ruined projects) with bad tools or products. Along the way, I’ll be taking into account multiple approaches and techniques in an effort to encompass as many different styles of turning as possible. My hope is that my efforts can reach as many people as possible. Whether you’ve been a hobbyist for years or you’re just starting out, this site is for you.
